Four Voice Canon #12
(“Doggerel”)
aka: Third of the 3 New Hampshire Songs, for chorus.
Date: 2000.
Place: New Hampshire.
Sounds: Four part choir (SATB).Elements: Harmonic series pitches, as in
#4, spread out between the four voices.
Comments: Each of the 3 New Hampshire Songs uses an “indigenous” NH text. Doggerel is a setting of what is often
called (erroneously) the Shaker “abcdarius.” It was the first notated four
voice canon to use individual “scores” for the different voices, suggesting
either multi-track recording or multi-conductor performance. In this way, the
notation is much simpler than, for example, #5.
Voice Canon #12 was recorded by the York
Vocal Index, William Brooks, director, and released on the Cold Blue CD.
