Playable Music Box

The basic idea of this project is a music box that looks and acts as a regular music box. It is somewhat delicate and aestheticly pleasing yet once activated in a special way it become a musical instrument and can be played (controlled) by a musician (user).

The instrument will be controlled by movement. My idea as it stands right now is to use 2 accellerometers to get X/Y controll parameters and to have the lid be another parameter. I could also embed photo sensors in the outside of the box, however keeping the controls hidden is imperitive.

The music box could contain two movements (chimes) or one. Having two would allow for tilting of the box to switch between the two like a crossfader. Which route to go should be self evident based on the implementation complexities of the first bullet point below.

I could use assistance in the following areas:

  • mechanical and electrical control systems for the music box movement (the mechanical chime)
    • engaging/disengaging motor
    • selecting motors and possibly gears
    • manging power requirements for these motors
    • switching mechanism (for the two movements/chimes case only)
  • altering the sound by somehow controlling the enclosure (the box itself)
    • How can we change timbre by physically altering the box?
    • can we electronicaly or mechanically control these alterations?
    • would something like adding drawers to the box work.
  • How can the box lid be used as a control parameter?
    • What kind of sensor should be used?
    • How much expressivity can be generated with any givn sensor?
