[edit] Project

A fancy-pants guitar string controller with lots of buttons (accordian style) and some joystick type knobs.

[edit] Goals

* Performance instrument
* Guitar string based
* Small, fits in backpack
* Self contained control unit, but plugs into a computer to produce all sound
* Expressive! Deep! Great! (and other adjectives). Good for composed and improvised performances.

[edit] Initial Technical Description

Six strings, and a whammy bar, mounted on a board about the size of a laptop. A hex pickup takes the signal from each string, and sends it to AVR microncontroller(s) which do pitch (zero crossing), onset and perhaps some gestural detection based on the vibration of the strings.

A rack of buttons laid out in a sort of accordian-style fashion. Easy to press, small buttons - hold down several at once.

A couple (at least two) continuous controllers, like joystick controls.

USB interface with the computer; control sent over UDP/OSC.

A few LEDs to return some very simple information (like tempos) from the computer.

Playing the controller will be a matter of strumming/plucking/carressing the strings, and pressing the buttons and moving the sliders. Think of it kind of like a cross between a guitar and an accordion, but without bellows.
