These are directories of currently active gamelan groups and groups performing related arts who can be contacted via the internet. Our lists include some contacts in Indonesia, where gamelan are plentiful but internet connectivity is not, as well as many groups outside of Indonesia in countries where the situation is reversed. The purpose of these lists is to provide a communication network so that gamelan performers and enthusiasts can get current information about each other easily, and those who are interested in playing or listening to gamelan music can locate groups near them.

This page has links to lists for different parts of the world. The format of the North American lists and a few other entries is based on a directory first compiled in 1983 by Barbara Benary, with assistance from Jody Diamond and Richard North, and revised in 1998. It was first posted to the web by Marc Hoffman.

Each listing follows this format:

  • name of the group
  • kind of instruments and builder if known
  • repertoire played
  • contact information
  • narrative on the group, its philosphies, projects, etc.
